Days to weeks: Most experts agree that bronchitis does not occur in young children (except for whooping cough). Most commonly, when a diagnosis of bronchitis is made in a child, the actual problem is a viral upper respiratory infection that has triggered asthma. Improvement is usually much faster with inhaled asthma medication than with antibiotics. If it is asthma, it is likely to come back.
