Generally not: Usually a peritonsillar abscess is a bad-luck complication of a tonsil infection. It usually occurs in healthy young people. While not to say that you couldn't have HIV or herpes for other reasons, they are not known to significantly predispose to peritonsillar abscess (although being immune deficient can increase risk of all sorts of infections). Get the pta treated by an ent.
