Cycles vary: Implantation does not often cause bleeding. Cycles vary naturally. Menses is sloughing of the uterine lining. Hormones from the ovary are the main influence, and problems with ovulation, or external hormones like birth control pills alter flows. Anatomical problems like fibroids and polyps are common in older age groups. An exam, pap smear, and ultrasound are good tests to consider.
