May treat symptoms: Many women have uterine fibroids--a benign smooth muscle tumor. Most have no symptoms, but some women have heavy bleeding or pain. Birth control pills can often treat both bleeding and pain associated with fibroids, and thus are helpful. Fibroids generally do not cause fibroids to grow--and use of the pill may protect against the future development of fibroids.
