Mostly clinical : The history of vaginal discharge and lower abdominal pain, with cervical motion tenderness on pelvic examination--in the right patient, can be all required. Usually vaginal swabs sent to lab for additional testing as well. Treatment with antibiotics, oral or first-dose IV then oral, or hospitalization for IV antibiotics--all depends on how sick patient is on arrival.
