Old dilemma: An intact hymen is the usual difference but some do no have this and you can get a surgical reconstruction of this tissue. Mutual trust is the usual method. There are many serious tribal rituals built around this distinction. It is an issue that includes the determination of paternity in such societies and can be a dangerous issues in some cases.

You could ask: For many societies, the presence of a hymen with a small opening for menstrual blood is the marker for virginity. Bloody drainage with first sex is used as proof. However, some are born without a hymen or one with a thin shelf, neither of which will bleed after sex. In some areas of the world, a surgical procedure rebuilds them. It also does not consider other forms of sex.
