Pharyngitis: A swollen, red, sore throat can be related to bacterial infection like strep or viral infection including "mono". A healthcare provider can perform a rapid strep screen, throat culture and even test for presence of ebv virus (cause of infectious mono) to determine if antibiotics are indicated or not. It's uncommon, but other infections and causes are possibilities as well.

Cold: Depending on the duration of your symptoms, you may have a throat infection. If this is a chronic condition, you may have other causes. Pain in moving the neck can be from swollen lymph nodes. See your doctor if your symptoms last longer than a few days.
