There are many : Patients and physicians hear about the major centers, such as md anderson, john hopkins, mayo clinic. So depending on where you live there is a university or major center close to you. However colon surgery is done by colo-rectal trained surgeons just about anywhere. You can check on their reputation by asking an oncologist for a referral to someone they have worked with for many years.

Do u need it?: Most rectal cancer surgeries today can be managed in an excellent manner by well trained local colorectal surgeons. The keys are that they are trained to perform mesorectal dissections and feel confident that they can do a low anterior resection as opposed to an abdominal perineal resection which leaves a permanent colostomy bag. Even the best of the best can't always avoid that. Mskcc, hopkins.

There are many: Depending on where you live, there are enumerable centers around the country with talented colorectal surgeons. Surgeons who are subspecialty trained in colon and rectal surgery will have the most experience with rectal cancer since these cases can be technically challenging.
