Uric acid. : Allopurinol inhibits a body enzyme catalyzing the final step in manufacturing uric acid. Build up of too much uric acid can lead to gout & kidney stones. Treatment of leukemias and lymphomas can also cause too much uric acid to be made, sometimes resulting in kidney damage. Allopurinol is commonly used to prevent these disorders.
