Alkalinizing apples: Acid reflux (heartburn) happens when there is an imbalance in the body between acidity and alkalinity (i.e., when the pH is low / acidic). Sweet apples (red delicious / granny smith) are alkaline and will therefore help to restore pH balance and prevent acid reflux. Eat the apple at room temperature right before eating in order to extinguish the burn of acid reflux. Don't lie down after eating.

Acid reflux: Fat in milk increases acid secretion. Certain meds, fatty foods, caffeine, soda pop relax the ring muscle between the esophagus & stomach (supposed to tighten to keep acid contents in stomach). Alkaline foods, sodium bicarbonate, acid blockers (zantac (ranitidine) & others), acid pump blockers (prilosec, prevacid, & others) can reduce the acidity and help heal inflammation from reflux.
