Eval: If could be an ocd symptom. Recommend evaluation by a doctoral level pyschologist or a pyschiatrist to assess more fully.

Could be: I can imagine that counting syllables could at least be distracting to you. Your best way to get your question answered is to see a psychiatrist or psychologist in person for an evaluation. They can investigate with you what's happening, and develop some ideas that might help you (since you said you want to stop). Good luck to you.
