Why are there common cold preventive shots every so often during the year?

No such thing: There are no preventive shots for the common cold sadly. The common cold actually represents a group of thousands of viruses some of which change. Because there are so many different strains and new ones are introduced into an area all the time, it would be impossible have enough shots to cover them all.
