Don't know yet: The birth prevalence in the United States for atrial septal defect ranges between 13.63 and 100.18 per 10, 000 live births. If the sono confirms an atrial or ventricular septal defect you will probably be getting an amniocentesis to r/o a chromosomal abnormality. If a significant defect is present, some sort of corrective surgery will be required. Hope all is well or works out!

Wait for results: You are being sent to check it out - this means a more detailed study. At that time they should be able to tell you if it is serious or not. Your 20 week scan was screening for problems. The higher level test will provide more detail. A heart problem is present in 8 of 1000 babies, many do just fine. Good luck.
