Polyhydramnios: Excess amniotic fluid is called polyhydramnios. This makes the abdomen much bigger and more uncomfortable. In most cases everything turns out fine. It increases the risk of preterm labor and placental abruption. In rare cases draining the fluid is necessary. All patients with excess fluid should be evaluated for diabetes. It is diagnosed by ultrasound amniotic fluid index.

Polyhydramnios: Too much amniotic fluid is called polyhydramnios. It is most commonly caused by gestational diabetes, but can also rarely be caused by a tracheal / esophageal abnormality. You should be tested for diabetes and have a detailed ultrasound to assess the cause.
