Herpes acquisition: Oral herpes is mostly acquired in childhood, typically from nonsexual contact with another infected child, or sometimes from an infected parent. It also can be acquired by adults from kissing infected persons (usually sexual kissing, not social kissing like a brief peck on the cheek). Genital herpes is only acquired by sex (oral or genital) with an infected partner. Poor hygiene has no role.
