Good question.: It is never 100% safe to have unprotected sex. Although the chance of pregnancy is low immediately after menses, it is still possible. You are also not safe from sexually transmitted infections. Condoms can prevent both pregnancy and std, and other hormonal contraceptive methods can add additional protection against unplanned pregnancies. Best wishes!

Preg and STDs: There is no danger in having sex before, during and after your period due to blood. Some people just prefer to avoid intercourse when there is blood present but it is not dangerous. You can still get pregnant and you can still catch stds. If you do not want to be pregnant you should use birth control and condoms.
