A member asked:

Pt with foleys and incontinent of bm, should they take 100mg of macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) daily?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: Patients who have chronic Foley catheters normally have bacterial colonization of the urine. Antiobiotics should only be used to treat symptomatic infections to lower the likelihood of developing bacterial resistance to the antibiotics. The fecal incontinence should be addressed for general health purposes and to prevent bed sores.
