Colic or flank pain: Kidney pain can occur as a result of stones or infection. People who have kidney stones report colicky pain that comes & goes during which it's impossible to get comfortable. Pain can range from affected back down flank & around to groin area. Kidney infection is typically localized to affected back at 'costovertebral angle" where ribs meet spine. Muscles don't hurt but tapping gently elicits pain.
