Why do so many doctors diagnose adhd and other neurological disorders when it's not their speciality? shouldn't they be referred to a specialist?!

Absolutely!: While someone may seem to have all the symptoms of adhd on the surface, it is imperative that a specialist take a detailed history to understand the context and the history of the problem. Symptom checklists are not adequate and can be misleading.

Generally: It is a good idea for other doctors to refer or provide some provisional diagnoses for patients in the mental health arena. Some doctors don't because they do feel comfortable or have had additional training in certain areas. For example a number of pediatricians are further trained in add/adhd management and diagnosis.
