Motivation important: An Insulin pump is very useful for a type 1 diabetic who is motivated to achieve good sugar control. It allows one to do "basal/bolus" therapy in a convenient way. The basal program allows different amounts of Insulin to be delivered continueously throught the day (and replaces Lantus or Levemir (insulin detemir) insulin). However, the pump is only as good as your ability to tell it what to do.

It depends: Just like most other aspects of diabetes management there is no "right" answer to this question. If you need additional flexibility in your Insulin dosing and don't mind being tethered to a device 24 hours a day seven days a week and your insurance will pay for it then a pump may be a good option. If you are well-controlled on Insulin injections and have issues with any of the above there may not be a reason to change. Ask your endocrinologist.
