Usually an STD: Pelvic inflammatory disease (pid) is a nonspecific term applied to any infection in the pelvis. It generally suggests an infection that has been sexually transmitted - most commonly chlamydia, gonorrhea, and / or trichomonas. However, many women are told they have PID based on their symptoms of pelvic pain and discharge, but their cultures are negative.
