Lightening the skin: Topical hydroquinone is the most commonly used medication to lighten the skin. It is available in 2% strength without a prescription. It is applied to the dark areas only, never to the surrounding normal-colored skin, twice daily. It is available in prescription in 4% formulations and can be compounded in higher strenghths if needed.

Reducing pigment: It would be best for a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist with expertise in the management of pigmentary disorders evaluate you so that a comprehensive plan can be designed for you. Some very important things to do: use spf 30 sunscreen daily and stay out of high sun or wear a wide brim hat is you cannot avoid activities when the sun is high. Peels and skin lightening agents can be very helpful.
