High sugar after low: The somogyi effect is a rebound phenomenon in persons with diabetes. Too much Insulin (or other glucose lowering agents) induces low blood sugar, which in turn results in release of the hormones epinephrine, cortisol, glucagon, and/or growth hormone, which stimulate pathways in the body that cause blood sugars to rise. When this happens after an overnight low it is known as the "dawn phenomenon".
