Hair follicles have some gender related attributes which vary as to person and inherited traits. In males, the continued production of testosterone can inhibit growth and lead to "male pattern baldness", which Minoxidil can inhibit to preserve continued hair loss, but once lost, "remedies" are limited to hair transplants, artificial appliances (wigs, etc).
