Surgery: Surgery is definitely an option but i would see someone who specializes in this and would make sure that your symptoms are of the sort that would improve. I would also get an MRI flow study that proves that there is abnormal flow through the foramen magnum.

Hey, it's OK: If it is indeed a type 1, it means an anatomical variant of little if any significance. As long as symptoms are not developing, this isn't your problem, just a coincidental finding. But if you are worrying, see a neurosurgeon, but i would avoid surgery unless structural changes develop.
