Lactation: The first stage of milk production (or initiation) occurs during the second half of pregnancy. Small amounts of milk may be secreted after about 16 weeks of gestation. The second stage (activation) involves breast swelling and copious milk production. This usually doesn't occur until about 2-3 days postpartum, but may be delayed with lower early milk volume, if this is your first pregnancy.
