GI Side effects: Oral iron supplements are poorly absorbed in the intestine and frequently poorly tolerated due to high frequency of GI side effects. Most commonly they produce constipation. Additionally they could cause abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea or nausea. They also can darken, even blacken the stools.
