Yes: Some nerves give feedback to your brain and spinal cord, helping your body to protect them. When they fail, the joints can be exposed to excess force without you knowing it. This is called a neuropathic (or charcot) joint. It is seen fairly often in the feet of people with the neuropathy (nerve damage) associated with diabetes mellitus.
