Brake fluid: Stimulant medications increased neurotransmitters in the brain improving the brain's ability to shift and focus attention and control impulses and emotion. I often use the analogy of a brake or steering system, we may have all the parts there, but without enought fluid efforts to guide, steer, and put on the brakes is very hard! imaging studies show there is underactivation which meds improve.

Balance transmitters: The brains of people with ADD/ADHD are less alert than the average person. the brains have lower amounts of Dopamine and Nor Epinephrin. Amphetamines like Adderall and Vyvanse, (lisdexamfetamine) increase the concentration of both Dopamine and Nor epinephrin, which corrects the deficits of ADD.

Also....: Structurally speaking the frontal lobes control people's attention and responses mostly by steering the brain activity in the right direction and stopping impulses and ignoring irrelevant information. In ADHD, this part of the brain is underesponsive. Stimulants activate the frontal lobes. We can now see on brain scans that stimulants correct this and "normalize" brain activity.
