Can amoxicillin be used to treat gum disease?

Not likely: You can use it to treat tooth infections. Gum disease is better treated by scaling and root planning (deep cleanings), surgery, and good oral hygiene. If an antibiotic is to be used in conjunction it can be applied topically, like arestin, which is minocicline, or even long term systemic tetracycline.

Depends: Amoxicillin alone will not treat your gum disease. Periodontal therapy by way of scaling/root planing or gum surgery can be used to treated your gum disease. Amoxicillin can be used in conjunction with your periodontal therapy.

No: It would not be the antibiotic of choice for periodontal(gum) disease. Tetracycline family is more specific for this bacteria. Even seen in the sulcular fluids of gum lining.

Poor choice: The way to treat gum disease is with definitive dental treatment by a trained dentist to include such modalities as scaling and root planing, along with surgical procedures as\if necessary. Plaque control and general health are also essential to success. Adjuncts such as Chlorhexidine rinses and tetracylines may also be helpful in some cases. Get a periodontal consult for your best options.
