Would it be painful if urine backed up into the kidneys?

Sometimes not always: Urine backing to kidneys (vesic-ureteral reflux) is not usually painful unless there is a UTI which also affects the kidneys. Occasionally severe reflux can cause sudden back pain with urination. I have even seen an adult patient who sometimes passed out from pain due to urinary reflux.

I have darker urine, slight to moderate to (at rare times) higher pain. I have had some on-going issues with this. At certain times, I have darker urine, and my mid/lower back is painful on the side. It's not so much a sharp pain, but a duller ache.
