Block back pain: These are nerves that control small joints in the back and neck. The blocks are done to help diagnose and treat the source of back or neck pain. If the blocks are helpful then you may be a candidate for an ablation procedure. Your doctor should have discussed all if this with you. If they didn't, then maybe you should get another opinion. These should be performed by a physician only.

Diagnose back pain: The medial branches are small nerves that sense pain in the facet joints of your spine. If your doctor suspects that problems in your facet joints, such as arthritis, are contributing to your pain, diagnostic medial branch blocks may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. If two successive diagnostic medial branch blocks are considered positive, your pain doctor may recommend rfa.
