Varies: You should ideally brush after every meal. Before bed is the best time to do the entire cleaning sequence : brush, floss, waterpik if needed. Some find it easier to do this in the am. Point is that at least once every 24 hours you need to get rid of all the plaque. Otherwise you build up the calculus (tartar) which you cannot remove. An electric toothbrush is proven to be best.Ok to do more often!

Once a day: Once a day is sufficient to maintain ecellent oral health. Quality, not quantity, is the key. Often people clean their teeth more frequently for personal hygiene reasons.

2-3 times: I recommend brushing morning and night. You can also brush after lunch if you desire. Floss once a day. And use a good quality mouthwash such as listerine once a day. Like the other doctor said, brushing is about quality. You have to contact all the surfaces and angle the brush to get between the tooth and gum. Your teeth should feel smooth like glass all over when you are finishes.
