Early pregnancy: Answer actually depends on the individual's cycle length. In short...Anything is possible. But in reality, if your cycle length is about 28 days, then most home pregnancy tests are unable to reliably detect a pregnancy until approximately a few days leading up to menses. It depends on the sensitivity of the test that was used and the person reading the results. See your doctor. Lab work may help.
