What is the process of detoxing from methadone?

Slowly: Because Methadone is a very long acting medication (the half life is 15 to 150 hours) Methadone needs to wean very slowly. I usually recommend one tablet per day per month. For instance, if you are taking 4 tablets per day, then you would wean to 3 per day for a month, then 2 per day for a month, then 1 per day for a month, then 1/2 tablet per month.

Gradual taper: Depending on what dose, Methadone taper can be a long process. When below 30 mg, switching to Suboxone (buprenorphine) may be an option.
