Testing too soon?: A urine pregnancy test gives a reliable result if done correctly and read correctly, the week after missing a period, or 3 weeks after having sex. If worried about pregnancy, one can do another urine pregnancy test another week later.

Test at right time: Normally a home pregnancy test won't trigger as a positive until you have actually missed your period (assuming that the woman is actually pregnant).
