Big thyroid: A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Sometimes they cause no symptoms. If the goiter is large enough, it can cause a visible lump in your throat; it can compress your airway and make it difficult to breathe, particularly when lying flat. It can cause difficulty swallowing, and even voice hoarseness.
