Birth Control: Some irregular bleeding the first 1-3 months on birth control pills is expected, however after that time your periods should be regulated and don't usually last longer that 5-7 days. Many women have light periods and menses lasting 3-5 days. Your birth control pill may need to be changed or the hormone dose adjusted.
