Anxiety: Could be anxiety related to claustrophobia. You might want to wait for the next lift if you have the time, to have a less full lift. Deep breathing and focusing on the outside of the lift would be helpful.

Cllaustrophobia?: You describe a well recognized condition call claustrophobia. Someone also needs to make sure you don't have a breathing problem. If this just started, this may indicate that there is something particularly stressful going on in your life and there is a good chance you will benefit from talking with a psychologist or psychiatrist.

It sounds like this: is a chronic issue for you. Irrational fear of small, enclosed spaces that negatively impacts on your life can be consistent with Claustrophobia. The description is consistent with hyperventilating. The fact that the elevator was stuffed with people likely worsened your symptoms. This is treatable.
