A member asked:

What is a normal grieving period? (i.e. after how many months does grieving become maladaptive and a person should seek help)

Bereavement: This is a timely question. Apa guidelines(being revised) say after 2 months, if symptoms persist, it is a major depression, or pathological grief. If the symptoms are more severe during the 2 months or later , pathological grief or depression may be dx'd. My experience is to focus on the unique patient situation, culturally, spiritually, psychologically, etc.Treatment may be needed at any time.
