After a person's body gets rid of the cold sore, the herpes virus dna remains in the nerve cells that link to the lips. If the virus never again reproduces itself and travels to the lip to pop up again, then she has been extremely lucky. Such luck is not in the control of humans (but one can take preventive medicine, if really needed).
