Yes: Birth control pills have a very high success rate. Taking them does have other medical risks, so be sure to talk with your ob/gyn. What pills do not do is prevent std's (sexually transmitted diseases); so you must have a strategy that prevents an unwanted pregnancy and a form of birth control that makes you safer from std's.
