Is it ok to take miralax (polyethylene glycol) daily for long periods of time for constipation?

Depends: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) (polyethylege glycol) softens the stool by retaining water in the stool. Some patients with lifelong difficulty moving their bowels may need MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) daily. It is important to make sure you stay well hydrated and eat balanced, nutritious meals. If unexplained constipation more than 2-3 wks, see your doctor and get it investigated.

No: Polyethylene glycol 3350 is used to treat occasional constipation. Polyethylene glycol 3350 is in a class of medications called osmotic laxatives. It works by causing water to be retained with the stool. This increases the number of bowel movements and softens the stool so it is easier to pass. Daily use may cause nausea, bloating, cramping, gas, diarrhea and hives.
