Etiology: A swollen knee without preceeding trauma may be related to a rheumatologic condition with asssociated arthritis, osteoarthritis with a flare, gout, pseudogout, infection, synovitis, or an osteochondral defect. Tumor is less likely. Swollen knee related to trauma may include fracture, torn ligaments or torn meniscus. There are so many possibilities you need to see your doctor for a proper exam.
