Shouldn't tolerate.: May be personality disorder. This is a method of coping that is very dysfunctional and can cause great interpersonal problems trying to keep your distance may cause this person to be very hostile with complete rejection or overly friendly in an attempt to draw you back.

Well or Not?: Many people with bipolar disorder do well with treatment and there is no need to stay away from them. Saying the wrong thing around them will not cause them to spiral out of control. On the other hand, if your friend is not doing well and is irritable, best thing to do is to encourage and support their treatment and keep yourself safe.
