Ovulation spotting: About 14 days before the next period is due is when many women will ovulate, or release an egg. Sometimes women will spot at that time. And sometimes women will have cramping for 1-2 days with ovulation. If it goes away in a day or so it was from ovulation. If not it might be that you formed a cyst on the ovary, which usually resolve on their own.
