Immune issues: In gbs, the immune system attacks the covering (myelin sheath ) of certain nerves. This causes nerve damage - usually begins to affect the nerves after you've had a viral or bacterial infection. Often it is after an infection of the lungs or stomach and intestines. Gut infection with camphylobactor - can cause this. Rx is with steroids, therapy, pain killers are given.

Unknown Cause: There is no known cure for guillain-barré syndrome. However, there are therapies that lessen the severity of the illness and accelerate the recovery in most patients. There are also a number of ways to treat the complications of the disease. Currently, plasma exchange (also called plasmapheresis) and high-dose immunoglobulin therapy are used.
