Variation of normal: Deformities are usually variations from normal. Deformities can be acquired such as from trauma or disease, or congenital. Many variations of congenital hand deformities can occur, but are not very common. Deformities from trauma or disease like arthritis are more common. Fractures that heal at an angle can cause deformity. Joint erosions from arthritis can also cause deformities.
