Good question: If these are hard, they could be airway casts from undertreated asthma, abpa, or bronchiectasis. Without knowing your history of cough, repeated infections (or not), if you live ina rural or urban area, your race (yes that matters in terms of genetic risks), etc it would be hard to say. If your internist can't answer the question, see a pulmonologist. If you get an example, save it and bring it.
