Athlete: If a purist the origin of the word "athlete" is from the greek word "athlos" meaning contest; therefore, the definition of an athlete would be one who possesses or has developed the skills, strength and stamina necessary to participate in a competitive sporting event. I think this can be extrapolated to include those dedicated, focused in their athletic training even if just a personal challenge.
